background

Healthcare Work

From early work at the Department of Human Services and national work with clients like Grant Medical Center in Columbus, Ohio, Dick Dyer has evolved an understanding of health care issues and how to move audiences toward health care goals. At DHS, Dick managed the Bureaus of Health, Medical Services and Elderly (all under different names today). He handled the first case of teenage AIDS in Maine, the Chernobyl incident, and the release of Maine Parent magazine.

With the development of his opinion leader research methodology, he successfully guided Grant Medical Center toward better customer satisfaction ratings, helped Midcoast Medical successfully move to Cooks Corner in Brunswick, and recently helped a Maine dentist understand his brand new patient base and establish communications and office management goals. With work for more than half of Maine’s hospitals, the Maine Hospital Association, the Maine Osteopathic Association, and Delta Ambulance, Dyer Associates is uniquely positioned to help health oriented organizations understand their constituencies and move them toward mutual goals.

Educational Work

Most public relations projects are based in some sort of educational goal of removing barriers or creating affinities. As a communications instructor at the high school, college, and business or entrepreneurial levels, Dick Dyer has utilized his teaching skills to create educational campaigns for the Maine Biological Research Coalition, Maine Arts Commission and, most recently, the H2O for ME citizens’ initiative. This work is again focused first on research to obtain an understanding of where the target audiences are in terms of understanding and then designing effective communications strategy to move them forward.

Environmental Work

A large part of Dyer Associates work has evolved from the early work at the Department of Conservation. In the forest products arena, Dick Dyer likes to say he has worked on everything from the stump to the roll wrapper. As such he understands Maine’s ecology and the issues inherent with a state that prides itself on environmental health. He has worked for entities often criticized for their lack of environmental friendliness, like the paper companies and the waste management industry, helping them to manage their business with better sensitivity to environmental issues. Work with Champion International (which was later sold to International Paper) helped them win two national environmental awards for the forestland management.

Dyer Associates’ location within a few miles of the Capitol helps because most of the issues managed in the above areas eventually manifest in some way in the Government offices and executive/legislative debates. For more than 25 years, Dick Dyer has worked with State Government to effect policy change toward the mutual benefit of all Maine citizens.
